I was 2 weeks old. There was something weird in front of me. I looked and decided to ignore it. I had just learnt to open my eyes. I heard people around me. It must have been my family and my Mumma and Papa’s friends. And then, I saw it again. I looked at it and decided, it was nothing important. And I fell asleep.
I was 3 years old. I saw the weird thing again. It was looking at me. I ignored it again and played with my Lego. I began to wobble my arm and my legs as I was about to finish the Lego tower. My parents where supporting me. I put the flag on the tower and laughed with joy. And then I saw it again. A weird thing looking at me. I didn’t like the way it was looking at me. I got upset and like every other young kid, I started crying. My parents rushed to me and, like magic, the thing disappeared, just into thin air. I ignored it that day, but I started paying attention and thinking about it. I didn’t know, how much it would affect my life.
I was 5 years old. The weird thing was back. I didn’t much pay attention to it. I was in a hospital bed. I had just been rushed in. I had been involved in a car accident. I wanted Mumma and Papa, I was so scared, so frightened and yet nobody was there to comfort me. I caught the weird thing looking at me. Just staring at me, like if there was nothing else to do. I stared back at it , and it disappeared. I heard people around me and I knew right away that my family was there. So, I ignored everything else and I fell in to a very, very, deep sleep.
I was five and a half years old. The weird thing was looking at me, but I ignored it that day. I was sat down in a chair, with my head lowered, in a black dress. I had just lost my parents. They are in a happy place, my aunt said. They were responsible for me now, my uncle and aunt. I had no other choice. The rest of my family lived too far away. I could only count on them to protect me. I leaned forward to say goodbye to my parents. I saw that they were sleeping peacefully, and I believed my aunt. They were in a better place. I didn’t see the weird thing the rest of the day. And I thought, one extra point to me, one less point for the weird thing.
I was 6 years old. It was my first day at school. 1st grade. I turned around to look at my aunt and uncle, and with their hands, they convinced me to go forward. And then I saw it again. The weird thing. I was getting annoyed with that thing, staring me all the time, chasing me everywhere I went. So, I decided to teach it a lesson, and show it who the boss really was. And this time, instead of it chasing me, I was chasing it. I was fun for a while, until I realised, it had yet again disappeared. I looked everywhere, but I couldn’t find it. I went to tell a few kids, what I had seen, but they told me to not be stupid, and to focus on my grades and my studies. I guess they were 4th year students. And at that time, a bell rang, and everyone started going in. I looked at my family, but they too had disappeared. I felt all alone until I found an adult that helped me find my class. Turns out, that first day at school, wouldn’t be my last.
I was 9 years old. I was about to graduate from pre-school to high school. It was Halloween and I decided, it was time to catch the weird thing and study it once and for all. So, I bought a ghostbusters outfit and made some changes to it. I found my aunt’s old vacuum cleaner and my uncle’s cardboard box and I taped both together. I gave it some paint, a ghostbuster tattoo and I was ready. Turns out that my aunt and my uncle where NOT happy with me for using their things and, I had to promise 3 times that I would pay them back, before they left me alone to go to school. As always, the weird thing was right there. It was easy, first I distracted it, then I sucked it in the vacuum cleaner. It was not ready, and it got sucked in, very quickly. I put a towel on top of the box and left for school. It never bothered me again.
I was 12 years old. I decided to check on the weird thing, but first, needed to finish my last day at school. Turns out, it was a total disaster. I forgot my bag at home, and everyone laughed at me. I was relieved when school finally finished. I got home, locked my room door and burst into tears. When I finally calmed down, I checked on the weird thing. It wasn’t there. I started to panic when I realised, it was on my arm. But it was acting weird. It was like, it was going to explode. I braced myself for the explosion, but it never happened. It just got bigger and created eyes, nose and mouth. I totally freaked out, grabbed my pencil and pointed it at the thing. The thing had turned into a purple head with blue glitter, just, didn’t have a body and, floated. I realised, it was lonely and wanted to help it, but first I needed to know what it was. I grabbed all my animal books and started searching. Nothing. I rushed out to the library, grabbed all of the animal’s books that were on the shelf and looked. There was nothing. And when I realised, I had a new kind of animal, on my arm. And that’s when I truly adopted it. It became my only companion and, my best friend.
I was 16 years old. I had just entered university. They had to do a especial licence but my weird thing was in. It couldn’t come to class with me, but it was always waiting for me in my room. One day, I arrived in my room, to find that my thing was missing. And then I heard a weasel. The weird thing was doing something weird. It looked unconscious, but it was growing to my size, creating arms and legs in the process. Then it stopped. It had transformed into a human, with pale skin. One moment it was unconscious, the next moment, it was breathing and coughing, desperate for air. I hit it’s back hard, and it stopped. It was a girl. The weird thing had transformed into a girl. The only thing left of the transformation, was a purple dress with blue glitter, and the fact that she didn’t have hair. She opened her eyes and looked at me. As soon as she looked at me, she smiled and locked me into a hug. And she whispered into my ear:
-I love you.
I hugged her back, happy, because she remembered me, and I helped her up. And together, we went to class.
I am 24 years old, and I am as happy as I’ll ever be. I’ve got a house, and a family, but the best of all, is my sister. My uncles accepted her in too the family, making me no longer an orphan. They gave her a name: Esmarela, and a nickname: Lawer. We are happy together and we just finished college. Every day, we climb on to a cliff and we say to each other, how much we love being family. Oh, and do you want to know my name? Well, my name is Wendy and I am happy that I meet my beautiful weird thing.
